Back in March of 2017 we started tossing around the concept of producing an online magazine for McDowell County.
After exploring and discussing many goals and ideas, there was consensus in three things we wanted to accomplish.
The first one was we wanted to shine a light on what others are doing in the County. Not everything is doom and gloom here. We have some individuals and organizations doing some incredible things and we felt that it was important to report on the impact of these efforts. In reviewing the past 12 issues we feel very good about meeting that goal.
The second goal was to report what we are doing. As a mission we promise to keep supporters informed of our activities. It is easy to get caught up with the work of the mission and get behind on sharing that work. The magazine has given us the opportunity to keep our promise. Related to this goal is speaking into the hearts of donors. We hesitate to speak of the mission’s financial need yet everything we do requires funding. We know it’s a spiritual battleground because money comes up every time we are under spiritual attack. The ministry recognizes many opportunities to serve in this community, but we can only meet those needs if we have donors. The magazine has inspired a few donors but we need to work harder to reach this goal.
Finally, the last goal was to create a corporate record of our journey. If we review the past 12 months we can mark goal three as a success. Do we always enjoy working on every magazine issue? For the most part the answer is yes. We are committed to year two and we plan to double down on all three goals. Please do not hesitate to let us know your feedback, and if you are enjoying the magazine. Kyler and Lesa Wilson work together on the photography, design the concepts and layouts for the magazine, and are responsible for it arriving in your inbox every month. Jay and Karen Wilson write most of the articles, and Donna Ludwinski edits the content. It is a great team to be a part of. Onward to year two!

Certified Lactation Consultant
(CLC) Training
West Virginia Breastfeeding Alliance recently held a five-day training to certify counselors in encouraging more individuals to support breastfeeding moms and families in our area. Kasondra Ramsey and Lesa Wilson attended and completed the training and are awaiting the results of their certification.
We are so proud of their dedication and passion for this important area of evidence-based education in our community. McDowell County has one of the lowest rates of breast-fed infants in the nation. The goal of this training is to improve informed decision-making and support those who struggle in the early days of breastfeeding.
Early Childhood Fair
Each year more and more people show up to this fun event for children at the Welch Armory! It is hosted by the Board of Education encouraging children to be enrolled in Universal Pre-K.
A bouncy house, tables full of games, educational exercises, and free giveaways attract preschoolers. It's always a fun day! Examples of activities are making slime, painting, balloon animals, rolling carts, learning to brush teeth with a model, and many other puzzles and games.
Some key agencies participating are Save The Children, Big Creek People in Action, the Governor's Highway Safety program, WIC, KVC, Parents as Teachers, Mountain Heart, Unicare, McDowell Public Library, and many more! If you attended the fair this year send the Board of Education your love via Facebook and show your support with a like!
It is hard to believe it's only been a year since the Sterling Drive-In began hosting an open mic night. Hearing local artists perform music, poetry, and story-telling has become a highlight for local residents each month. It's a wonderful night to connect with others and enjoy the talent and pride of McDowell along with a nice dinner at the Sterling.
Currently open mic night is held every second Friday of each month. We would like to wish Open Mic Night at the Sterling Drive-In a happy one year anniversary, and we look forward to many more years to come!

Spring Fling
We at CCX always look forward to the annual Spring Fling. Tug River Health Clinic is responsible for putting on this event. A few tables set up at the event were occupied by craftsmen and food vendors, as well as health care services and resources for families.
Even in the rain, the laughter and smiles on those present were contagious. Thank you Tug River for setting up the wonderful day!
Local Spotlight: Jerry Gardner

Local of Iaeger WV, Jerry Gardner is an entrepreneur of high quality wood products including bowls, plates, vases and more. Each article is crafted with their own personality and charm. In his own words Jerry says "The wood tells me what they need to be."
Jerry's work is a prime example of the creativity coming from McDowell County, These works of art are made with incredible mastery and top-tier craftsmanship that you'd expect to see in a gallery in a big city. Each piece is unique, and each one is crafted with a special kind of pride and care.
His dedication and skill are truly to be admired!
Care for Kobe
Our community has rallied to support an infant with a devastating diagnosis: neuroblastoma. This a is a cancer of the sympathetic nervous system that affects very young children, usually under the age of 5. Kobe is a twin born in January to a family very dear to our hearts.
Distressing symptoms sent the family to different hospitals in two states. Praise God for providing the family a contact to help get a referral to one of the top children's cancer hospitals and leading neuroblastoma expert in Cincinnati where Kobe will be seen next week.
Please pray for this precious baby and his extended family as they navigate this complex medical landscape, and please consider supporting their travel and medical costs:
